How To Be An Ally in Your Organisation | Evolve Communities

Our recent Yarning Webinar sparked powerful conversations around personal and organisational allyship. One participant called it “incredible, real, full of love, truth, and practical steps.” Another challenged us to go deeper. In this blog, we reflect on both—exploring the link between individual action and systemic change, and how each of us can play a role in meaningful Reconciliation.

Allies were on fire in our Closing the Gap webinar—so much so that our team struggled to keep up with the depth of the discussion. One participant shared:

“Incredible. Real. Full of love, truth, and practical steps. I have left clearer, more motivated, and better equipped to lead meaningful change in my organisation. It reminded me that even when the path feels heavy, we walk it together—with no shame or blame—and that real change is possible when each of us plays our part.”
– Jess, Diversity & Inclusion Lead

While Jess’s words captured the majority sentiment, an anonymous comment stopped me in my tracks:

“Because this is through my employer I thought there’d be more focus on how to push the workplace to be more allied instead of so focused on individual allyship.”
– Evolve Yarning Webinar Participant

At Evolve, we believe change starts within and radiates out. One person who leads by example, who speaks up, who listens deeply, can spark a movement. So yes, while allyship and Reconciliation are personal first, real change happens when individual action is supported by organisational commitment.

We use our R3 Culture approachReflect, Relate, Reconcile—to consider all feedback. For Step 2 – Relate – I wonder if this participant felt frustrated or unsure how to create change in their workplace. Maybe unsupported? Perhaps we (Evolve) didn’t make the link between personal and systemic action clear enough in the webinar.

That link—between personal and systemic change—is at the heart of everything we do. Our programs are designed to shift behaviours, hearts and minds, so that allyship becomes embedded in how an organisation operates.

The 2025 National Reconciliation Week (NRW) theme, Bridging Now to Next, reminds us that it takes both reflection and momentum to create lasting impact. In the coming weeks, leading up to our NRW public webinar, we’ll be unpacking this theme and offering practical actions you can take—both personally and organisationally.

Because allyship isn’t either/or.
It’s personal and organisational.
Heart and action.

If I can leave you with the Star Thrower Story (inspired by Loren Eiseley)…

Walking along the shore, a man sees someone gently picking up starfish and throwing them back into the sea.
There are thousands washed up.
He asks, “Why bother? You can’t save them all.”
The star-thrower smiles, lifts another, and replies:
“No, but I can make a difference to this one.”

At Evolve, we believe allyship works the same way.
One act. One voice. One person choosing to make a difference.
And from that, change grows.

What will it look like for you to throw the starfish back—in your role, your team, your workplace?
