Navigating the National Conversation

Closing the Gap has been back in the national conversation this week. Because there is so much new reporting and strong commentary, it can be hard to know what to take in. Therefore, if you are feeling confused or overwhelmed, you are not alone. In fact, we felt that too. Consequently, we are coming back to one steady principle: Do not give up listening.

Actually, we felt that too. Consequently, we are coming back to one steady principle: Do not give up listening.

Why We Often “Freeze” at Work

For many people, this work shows up at the office—perhaps in a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) meeting or a leadership conversation. In addition, it often happens in moments where people want to be helpful but are afraid of getting it wrong.

When people freeze, workplaces can fall into silence or defensiveness. Unfortunately, performative action also becomes common. However, none of these create true cultural safety, so we need a different approach.

  • Performative action (acting for appearances only).

None of these reactions creates cultural safety.

It is a reminder that policies and targets are not abstract data points; they are lived across a lifetime.
