Each year, Australians receive another Closing the Gap update. The same questions rise again.

For returning Allies, some of the information can feel familiar. One participant in our webinar said it plainly:
“The session was great, as it always is, but as an existing ally it was (mostly) very familiar to me.”
That honesty matters. Familiar does not mean pointless. It is a sign the work is ongoing.
Closing the Gap is about real outcomes
Closing the Gap is a national framework with targets connected to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These targets cover areas such as health, education, housing, safety, justice, and wellbeing.
When we revisit Closing the Gap, the aim is not to collect more information. It is to face what the reporting is showing, with care and clarity, and to keep returning to a practical question.
How do we contribute in ways that strengthen cultural safety and reduce harm?
Why workplaces matter
Many people engage with Closing the Gap through their workplace. This might involve a Reconciliation Action Plan, leading a team through complex conversations, or wanting to support First Nations colleagues respectfully.
This is often where allies get stuck. Not because they do not care, but because they do not want to get it wrong.
In workplaces, uncertainty can lead to silence, over-correction, or performative action. None of these create cultural safety. Over time, they can also increase cultural load for First Nations people.
A practical approach for Allies and leaders
At Evolve Communities, we do not teach through shame, blame, or guilt. Shame shuts people down. Blame makes people defensive. Guilt can lead to burnout.
Instead, we focus on grounded understanding and practical next steps, especially for workplace Allies and leaders. This includes:
- practical language and workplace examples
- how to hold complexity without freezing or shutting down
- what helps, and what harms, in workplace allyship
- how to take action that is respectful and sustainable
